Awning poles

G'day chaps, having received all my kits and the pictures that have just been put up i can honestly say i am really along with the quality i am to say the least.

I must say along with all the hassle Robin has had i am surprised he has not just given in but after asking for the rear section to fit one of my ambulances if funds allow i might even ask for two due to my awning being a hassle when on your own it makes sense to have them on both .

I mentioned the above for an ambulance because there is plenty of room to do so and rather getting wet through however because i have a caravan rail all round the rear body of my truck it just gives me a choice if it's only a short stay .

Just the views of a silly old fool that's happy with life after a weekend at leafers at the pit with friends. R-Rose

should save putting a tent up for weekends away just need to get a canvas for it now

Hi Simon,

As you know we usually use cheap tarps from ebay because of sparks from the firepit!
I have considered making a cover using canvas from an old frame tent or caravan awning, but if using a firepit with a chimney, you do tend to get the occasional spark hole so it would be a shame to put all that work in and end up with it holey!
Might be ok with an open firepit though

For just a top cover we have single use one-man protection type of things, available from the military suppliers at shows for around £3.50 - the material is better than the cheap tarps and is just the right size. Plus you get some very sharp pegs and loads of para cord as a bonus That's what Patrick & I had on each of ours at t'Pit last weekend.

However, for best protection we use tarps big enough to cover the top and one side - that way you can protect against the prevailing wind, or use one long enough to go right over to create a tunnel, though the normal size tend to be too wide then, so require doubling up.

we acquired an old porch awning for a caravan minus it's poles a while back and when we get a moment we will try that for size as they're normally quite narrow

Could be worth having a word with "Counter Rivet" over on seriouslyseries ....he was the chap at T'pit with miles of ex military canvas/ripstop .

Yep, he's on here under his old name, gossamer.

He showed me his stuff at the weekend, but the 9x9 canvasses he had are a bit too heavy for the self supported frames, I think.
Could be used with a vertical pole or two to support the end, but that defeats the simplicity a bit

I made a few extra LWB sets in the last batch - only difference is the length of the slide poles so could easily be cut to length.

Well we've done it!

Had our first camping session using the awning on the series 3, so much better having the extra room. We stayed at Cromer in Norfolk set up on a nice sunny afternoon during the night it rained heavy but inside was lovely and dry, the tarp is a bit multi coloured but apart from one sheet its what I had already lying around we managed to find a shop selling the stall clips for 60p each so bought 20 of them which worked great holding the tarps on assisted by tent pegs at the base and a washing line pole just to help keep it square so the tarp didn't get caught on the stove.

Next thing we need to sort is some canvas to make a proper cover with zip out sides but that can wait.
