Searching for a Dormobile in Australia

I've been contacted by a gentleman who is looking for a Dormobile that was driven to Australia by his Uncle in the late 60's. It was pale green and he tracked me down because he thought the one I own may have been 'it'.

The UK registration was 2786 PH which I believe was Guildford just before 'C' registration in 1965. Is there any way from the registration of tracking down the chassis number ??

It was driven through Europe, the Middle East then down through India and shipped to Perth. From there it was driven to Tasmania. The chap I spoke with has the full itinerary and even details of the food purchased throughout the trip

I have a fantastic picture taken on a camping trip in Tasmania and a newspaper article detailing the arrival in Scottsdale, Tasmania. I'll check back with him before posting the pictures.

He wants to find it, buy it and then drive it back to the UK.

Thanks,

Colin

Only one I know of that colour belongs to Gary (67 Dormobile) on here, but his has no damage as you described.

Thanks Jerry,
Just waiting for an OK on posting up some pictures.
The front panel on the picture you posted and mine look different to the picture I was sent in a newspaper article.

Not sure when the front panel was changed

In the picture he supplied there are chrome surrounds to the headlamps like a Series I. Mine and the one in your picture have a raised section in the front panel but no chrome surround. When was this changed ?

The damage to the bonnet & bulkhead (near the vents) wasn't serious but should still be evident.

Having a chassis number would help him with his search.

Thanks,

Colin

I have the OK to post photos, the person who contacted me will be running adverts in Tasmanian newspapers next week.

If anyone from the UK can help with linking the registration to a chassis number it would be help enormously. Probably only registered for a few years before it left the country.

Thanks,

Colin

Colin/Jerry - there was that one in Tasmania on Gumtree a couple of years age - also green - probably nearly impossible to trace now.

Was in pieces but saveable from memory.

Thanks Gary,
There is a blue one, partly stripped, which I put the chap onto but it would need a lot of work, he's had a look and walked away......
Someone in Tassie also knows of a pale green one but the person has owned it for years and it came from the mainland. Mind you the one he is looking for could have got shipped to the mainland & back again.

I was hoping that somehow we could get the chassis number via the UK registration but I think we'd need someone in the 'trade' or the Police over there to do this. A mate tried and didn't get anywhere.

Best bet would be an appeal on the Dormobile forum to see if anybody is going to Gaydon soon. They have a record of all chassis numbers, build dates and registration numbers there, but I think they only open the archives for on one day a week .

Phillip (Dudley on here) spent a fair bit of time researching series 2 Carawagons there, he may be able to tell you a bit more about the process?

Hopefully this chap will track down his vehicle and have another adventure!

Thanks Patrick,
The Series 2 Club have suggested contacting Surrey Council which I've just done.
I was going to try Dormobile (do they have any of the original records ?) but their website seems to be out of action.

Gaydon might be the answer.

Thanks for the heads up.

Emailed Gaydon and received a reply.
They have build records but not registration numbers.......

The search continues.
