new roof
Re: new roof
I couldn't decide what to do about the flocking on my roof. It was damaged where the windows had leaked and bubbled it in one or two places in the middle. I have stripped it all off and will be taking it to Banbury flocking service who seem to do alot of car dash parts. The colour looked beige but when I removed the wooden blocks underneath was the original colour a light grey with a mixture of red and blue flock, they have quoted me £300 I will let you know how I get on.
When I have finished this one I have another in kit form, I need to replace the bendy aluminium sheet as the original is completely damaged so thankyou for the info on which sort of aluminium to use and where to get it. I used Co Baines for the rubber seals (very helpful and good company to deal with) and gold and wassle for the continuous hinges, undrilled.
Regards and hope it goes well Christine

Rebecca at All metal services was very helpful when getting the bendy aluminium sheet. She knows her stuff.

Re: new roof
Wow Dave, that looks very easy and effective!
The flocking kit from Frosts (I think) comes with a rubber bulb blower and you are supposed to puff the flock onto the surface, then sweep up the flock which didn't stick, and puff it again!
I could see how a small section might be do-able like that, but couldn't imagine doing a whole Carawagon roof!
The guy who told us he did it at Searle said it was a full protective suit job.
One of my projects has a bare roof, so I might go the same way myself.
Thanks for sharing
Cheers,
Robin.

Re: new roof
Well Dave, you little Flocker.
Has the glue dried and has the flock stuck? Never heard of flocking until now.

Re: new roof
Robin, its not too messy as the flock is almost drawn out of the machine and heads straight for the adhesive however I'm going to need a clean area with no draughts to do it.
Mick, yes the glu dried and the flock is still stuck. PVA is no good for anything permanent it was just for test purposes. The epoxy I got with the flock will last for years.

Re: new roof
Mick, flocking was an option on the inside of Carawagon roofs - used for dashboards etc. as well on some classic cars, I think.
Most Carawagon roofs I've seen have it, but a few don't.
As well as looking better than bare metal, the idea is that any condensation which forms doesn't drip, but sort of spreads through the fibres.
Steve's is bare, and his suffers a lot from condensation, dripping on him through the night!
The difficulty is applying it as you can't just spread the fibres over the adhesive - each fibre should be stuck at one end and stick out vertically, hence the blowing on and Dave's high tech electrostatic technique
Cheers,
Robin.

Re: new roof
Bob came today and as soon as he said about flock grass on model railways, it all came flooding back. Being about 10 years old, covered in glue and green stuff. They were the days.

It's looking good! There are still a few niggles to work out but I'm nearly there
