Well this wasn't a very good year for me, the fact I don't have a modern car and I'm under 30 were the main blockers.
I didn't pursue some of them through to the end, but none of them took exception to insuring a (factory) camper conversion this year, so they are all worth giving a try.
The short story is: Peter James won the 2014 competition with their renewal quote of £157.97
.

.
Trying to insure:
1969 series IIa SWB - 1998cc Diesel (Perkins Prima)
1972 series III LWB Carawagon - 2500cc Diesel (200 TDi)
Requirements
European breakdown cover with recovery of vehicle and passengers.
Use for commuting (Mainly SWB, but Carawagon if going away straight from work)
Father as named driver
Unlimited milage ( on the Carawagon)
Ideally able to provide a Green card certificate (at least for the Carawagon)
Salvage rights if possible
Excess below or equal to £200
Notes
Age 28
Both vehicles kept on my driveway in view of multiple houses.
No longer own a ‘normal’ car like last year.
'--> But I am a named driver on two other modern cars.
Neither has their original engine - though both now smaller cc than original.
Both have parabolic springs and stereos fitted, if they want to know about modifications.
Member of the Series 2 club
No convictions/medical issues
'--> But one accident in December 2013 - encountered an unlit motorcyclist late at night. Claimed for O/S wing repairs but couldn’t prove who was at fault.

Legal cover is an extra £20
£15 option to keep salvage AND get full payout in the event of a total writeoff.
Will provide green card insurance for Europe.
£170 for just the SWB without any extras...said that the mileage estimate of 8000 between them was pushing the cost right up. I estimated 8000 as I plan on taking the Carawagon on a big trip next year, and the SWB is my daily drive.

Useless in the evenings - claim to be open but it's a skeleton crew who don’t have authority to make decisions.
Same conclusion as last year, they have a minimum of £86 per vehicle with a possible reduction of about £10 for multi car. But no breakdown coverage on multi car policies.

Refuse to cover both unless one is treated as a modern car (and pay modern car rates). This would be fine for somebody who has a modern car as well, but no good for me.

Still no multi car policies - same as last year it would be about £180 for just the SWB if European breakdown is included.

No multi car policies
Can’t insure a ‘daily drive’ vehicle - This would be fine for somebody who has a modern car as well, but no good for me.

Have their own in house underwriter - with minimum prices of £50 for a vehicle if that vehicle is totally standard. Unfortunately they don’t consider either of mine to be standard and admitted they wouldn’t be able to come anywhere near the £157 renewal quote from Peter James
Diamond

No multi car policy, £90 each minimum but would prefer drivers over 30 who do less than 1000 miles a year. Neither of which are me. No issues with the Carawagon though, accepted it as a factory conversion.
Couldn’t beat the Peter James £157.97 renewal so didn’t pursue all the way to a final cost.

Very friendly chap, apologised for not being able to insure under 30s and told me to call back in a couple of years. Recommended calling Adrian Flux but also advised that the £157.97 renewal quote from Peter James was a good one.
Classic Line

No issues with Carawagon, £190 for both which includes legal cover, European breakdown ( + home start), £250 excess and that’s with Equity red star.
Mentioned that having them on the driveway rather than a garage increases excess from £100 to £250

Concerned about lack of a ‘normal’ car - offered to insure one of them as a normal car and the other as a classic - but would not be able to do so for a sensible price. Again they would be good for somebody with a modern car.

Worst on hold music yet...intended to send the listener into a daze and forget who it is they are calling or why.
£170 best they could do for both, this is the second best so far I think.

Don’t do multi car policies - when I asked if they would be able to come anywhere near the £157.97 renewal quote from Peter James he was a bit taken aback and said “ooh, probably not no”
Gott & Wynne

Very friendly chap, couldn’t come near the £157.97 renewal cost, but advised that their minimum policies are about £86 per vehicle plus the legal fees and £20 for European breakdown cover.

Their underwriters don’t like insuring under 30s - they do allow it but are very strict apparently, and because of the accident last year they can’t give me a quote.
--- And finally, Peter James who insured me last year ---

These were my insurers last year it was £136 last year and their renewal quote is £157.97 - £22 higher than last year.
I phoned to ask why it’s (relatively) so much higher and was told the accident claim was still ongoing as the third party are still querying it 10 months later…so it’s marked as unresolved and so the premium is increased to match. I doubt it'll be resolved in the next week, so I'll be paying £157.97 shortly.
So in conclusion, it's not a great success, but hopefully those of you who are over 30 and have a modern car will have better luck.

Re: Insurance trials 2014
Great work Patrick
Just for info - when a digger ran into the back of my van a few years ago it was a few weeks before my renewal was due.
The renewal came through higher, as you found, but when the claim was settled a few weeks later they refunded the difference, so there's hope yet.
