Adventure Overland 2014

Post by RMS » Sun Sep 28, 2014 8:59 pm

This was another great event - not Land Rover based, though there were plenty of LR campers there, including some of our members on the Land Rover Campers Facebook stand.
It's more of an Overlanding show with all types of vehicles from bikes up to 7.5 ton monster campers, and seminars on all sorts of overland travel subjects.

Patrick, Phillip, Steve and myself (all fresh back from Scotland  ) were there in our Carawagons, and we were joined by another member (travelrover) in his 110 converted ambulance.
We were also joined on the stand by the (in)famous Toby Savage who came to speak at a couple of the seminars.
He came in his Carawagon, so naturally gravitated towards the other Carawagons, meaning we had 5 Carawagons on the stand :gold:

(Please excuse the poor phone camera pics - I forgot my camera :thud: )

Why is the 110 stuck in the corner of the stand!!!?

Just a tiny point of issue... Our members? Surely this isn't actually a Club, because LRC on Facebook isn't it is just that a loose group of enthusiasts who by the very nature of being Land Rover Campers are inclined to do what they like....

Hold on, isn't Toby Savage one of our members?????????

Dan, Bob arrived with his 110 before we did on Friday, and was directed to our stand by those on the LRC stand as he declared himself to be an LRCC 'member'. Go figure
He had paid for camping as it was a last-minute decision to come, but wanted to be part of our display rather than on the camping field and was quite happy to be 'stuck in the corner' as you say.

I really don't understand what your 'tiny point of issue' is  Are you saying that as we are not a 'club' then we shouldn't be calling our registered users 'members'?
That would really be nit-picking, in my opinion, especially as both the LRC facebook group and the LRCC forum managed to get 'club stands' at the show!

By the way, the dictionary definition of 'Club' is "An association of two or more people united by a common interest or goal". No mention of subscriptions, committee, constitution, articles etc. so in that definition LRCC and LRC could be called 'clubs'.

And yes, Toby has been a 'member' on here since the forum was formed in Feb 2012

Robin,

I was making light of the LRCC - LRC thing as if it really matters who is on what stand... I.e I was being Ironic about the show and about Clubs in general and in particular taking the pee out of your statement about LRCC members being on the LRC stand (which actually had little to do with me anyway as LRC is more of a collective thing). It just felt like you were exhibiting a bit of a chip on your shoulder.... Thanks for the dictionary definition though.

Dudley... Really mate....... :stars: It wasn't long ago you were thanking me for finding the Carawagon that enables you to be on the stand as Robin was buying them all. Thanks for the sarky emoticon.

Ok Dan, though as I think has been said before - banter is great around the campfire where you can see other's faces and gauge their reactions, but it can very easily be taken the wrong way without that personal contact

I don't know what you mean about a chip - I just mentioned that there were other LRCC members elsewhere at the show, two of which happened to be on LRC stand as that's the way it worked out with ticket allocation which I'm sure John and Neil will confirm :tiphat:

Really? I picked up a dead Carawagon body and two really sad restoration projects which no-one else seemed to be bidding on - hardly 'buying them all' and everyone else had a chance to do the same thing.
It's not as though I'm secretly approaching owners and forcing them to sell - there have been plenty on ebay I haven't bought

Cheers,
Robin.

As you know Les, I only go for rusting wrecks - yours is too nice (and hence too expensive) for me :tiphat:

Plenty of room left for more, but I think two projects is enough to keep me busy for a little while :embarassed:

Dan,

Just seen your post re my defender at Adventure Overland. Sorry you seem to feel put out.
I had no intention to pollute the stand or give offence in any way, my intention was solely to meet other members of LRCC as from the forums it seems a very sensible club (unlike a lot of others) with a wealth of knowledge on Land Rovers.

Had I known it would have caused raucous comment I would have parked elsewhere. Had I been parked amongst the other Carawagons it would have totally spoilt the display and your point would have been very valid.

My decision to go to the event was a last minute one due to other commitments and in no way involved LRCC and should the stand have been full or my parking at the edge cause any members any concerns I would have moved. Not a problem, I had my own ticket and plenty of people to meet up with.

It was good to meet other members and like them I, learned a little more and had a good weekend.

Once more sorry you feel put out.

Bob
