Insurance trials 2013

Post by Peaceand » Fri Nov 01, 2013 1:23 pm

Well it's been a good year with very little 'yes, I know it's not on your computer, but it's a factory fitted conversion' required. So having rung round the usual suspects I thought I'd publish the results here for reference.

Trying to insure:
1969 series IIa SWB
1972 series III LWB Carawagon.

Requirements
European breakdown cover
Use for commuting
Father as named driver
Unlimited mileage (at least on the Carawagon)
Salvage rights if possible
Excess below or equal to £200

Notes
Age 27
Own modern car too - Pug 307 (about £500 to insure normally)
Vehicles kept on a driveway
No claims/accidents/convictions/medical
Member of the S2 club

.

Peter James
http://www.peterjamesinsurance.co.uk
Unprompted quote through post based on last year's information - £136
Unlimited mileage on both, including commuting with no prerequisites of having an 'everyday' car.
Phoned to add Dad to the quote too, no change in price.

Footman James (Existing insurer)
http://www.footmanjames.co.uk/classic-car-insurance
Quoted £169.35 - reduced to £148.47 when told about Peter James’ £136.21 quote

Lancaster
http://www.lancasterinsurance.co.uk/cla ... urance.htm
Reckoned they wouldn’t be able to come near the PJ £136 quote so didn’t pursue further.
Mentioned (once clear I wasn’t going to be a customer) that their cheapest rate was £86 per vehicle with a possibly reduction for the multi car policy.

RH
http://www.rhclassicinsurance.co.uk
£158 for both. Wouldn’t come down further to match the PJ quote.

Peter Best
http://www.peterbestinsurance.co.uk
No multi car policy, £146 for SWB + £46 for European recovery
Didn’t pursue further quote for Carawagon.
Very polite lady - phone if you like being addressed as Sir

Heritage (aka Norton)
http://www.heritage-quote.co.uk
No multi car policy, but will do ‘Fleet’ policy for three or more vehicles.
However after going through all the details for the Pug too, their fleet policy doesn’t apply to my postcode after all.
Individual policies are:
SWB - £181
Carawagon - £325

Sureterm
https://www.sureterm.com
No multi car policy
Reckoned they wouldn’t be able to come near the PJ £136 quote so didn’t pursue further.

Diamond
http://www.diamondinsurance.net
No multi car policy
Reckoned they wouldn’t be able to come near the PJ £136 quote so didn’t pursue further.
Mentioned (once clear I wasn’t going to be a customer) that their cheapest rate was £68 per vehicle plus £20 European breakdown cover

NorCounty
http://www.caravanrescue.co.uk/classic-car.html
Phoned and left a message but never got a reply. Didn't pursue further as the website didn't look promising.

Hagerty
http://www.hagerty.com
Won’t insure under 30’s (Just switched underwriters apparently)

ClassicLine
http://www.classiclineinsurance.co.uk
£167 for both with UK recovery European recovery extra £30.
Said they could probably match the PJ £136 but not with the European recovery too.

Adrian Flux
http://www.adrianflux.co.uk
£172 for both, if including European breakdown (about £40 I think)
Mentioned that the price was increased by having second named driver? - This seems odd as other companies like Peter James don't do this.

So, Peter James won my money this year!

Interesting. I am crippled each year on the fact I park on the road, this despite it being a no through road and terraced so incredibly secure with all my neighbours . Really limits who will cover me , don't need breakdown and don't need unlimited mileage which helps.

Insurance Companies, they not in my good books.

£225 last year for FC, SWB and Dormobile.
£325 this year.

Last October, get crash into when driving FC. No real damage to FC, but 3 day old Ford Ka needed door skin and touching up either side of door. Joe was with me and can confirm we were stationary when the Ka hit me. They admitted it was their fault at the scene, but soon changed their minds. As it was on a country lane and I do not have an independent witness, I cannot prove I was stationary and they want to settle 50/50. I have tried to fight it, but to no avail. It has just cost me an extra £100 on my insurance this year.

Be warned. Take pictures of the accident and get everything in writing.

Exact same thing happened to me in 2005 Mick. Head on collision, I was stationary, other party initially admitted liability and then retracted. After months of fighting was settled 50/50 and I am still upset about it 8 years later. Get photographs, get it in writing and forget being nice, I never will be again.

I'm still a few years the wrong side of 25, which is highly irritating when it comes to insurance... but the Carawagon is insured fully comp for £111 which I was most pleased with when I took it out last December

Hi,

If you are involved in an "incident", even if you are in no way to blame, even if you don't make a claim, even if you have protected NCD, you can expect a 15% loading on your premium for the next five years. So do your sums, and add it to your claim. Your insurer may deny they do this ... ask then to put the denial in writing.

If you do not tell your insurers, and they find out, they will refuse to pay out for any subsequent Own Damage claims. There was a note to that effect with my latest renewal documents.

And all that includes any car that you own, or were driving.

If somebody hits you, and you are in no way to blame, your claim is against the other driver ... not their insurers. Take it to Small Claims. But if you win, their insurers will pay out, so they may get a barrister involved. For the sake of £10 per year, I would not want to be without Legal Protection cover.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread - but I'm about to do the 2014 version of this - does anybody know of any companies I should add to the list this time around?

As before I'll do a writeup of each, and hopefully it'll be of use to other people insuring old land rover campers.

Thanks,
Patrick

Be interested to see how you get on with Peter Best; very polite, but didn't give me much confidence that I'd been understood.
Adrian Flux seemed much better, but add several "features" to their policy so it sounds more expensive than it actually is.
