Just got here.

Hi,

Sorry I'm late, got delayed by the Verification Code thingy.

I recognise several names from other groups, so I'll keep the intro short.

John Williams (vintage 1939) from South Wales. My user name is based on my old RAF number, and I sign with my "last three". At my age, it helps me to recognise my own mail.

I drive a Disco, but have a 1960 Land Rover S2 LWB petrol in the garage. Under 50,000 miles on odometer, and seems to have been standing for 27 years. Pistons are rusted in, and the mildew has matured. It was bought with the intention of fitting a TDi (but everybody frowns at that idea) and converting to "camper capability" .... bed, bog, basin, and hob.

More anon, elsewhere on forum.

John W (hereafter 602)

Hi John,

Glad you made it

I think some folk used to frown at the 200TDi transplant, but even some 'hard core' chaps eventually succumbed.

The 200/300TDi really is one of the most sensible choices, but they are getting harder to find. Even early MOT failure Discos seem to be going for £500+ :thud:

We got high 30s mpg from the 200TDi in our S3 Carawagon on our 5000+mile Morocco trip last year, and that was with a big wind-jammer box on the roofrack!

With good soundproofing and 3.54 diffs, it's quiet as well. Up to around 65mph you can hold a conversation without raising your voice!! Though we've also fitted the bulkhead soundproofing mat from an up-market Disco and welded disco mounts to the chassis, so I think that makes it quieter than the usual installations :tiphat:

Cheers,
Robin.

Hi Robin,
your carawagon looks really good, I've seen a few pics of it on one of the other sites. Any chance you could put a post up of the soundproofing works that you carried out ?? What materials you used ?? Any pics etc ?? Any tips ??
