Ebay, early Carawagon prototype?

Post by RMS » Mon Jun 11, 2012 9:57 am

Well, here we have yet another interesting find!

Claims to be a Searle, but with an 'Xpander' type roof, reversed, with a Dormobile interior

I must admit that if we didn't already have two Carawagons, I might have been bidding on this one myself as it looks such an interesting example.

It needs just the right amount of work to deter the 'bling big spenders' I think, but we'll see how it goes.

Ebay link HERE
1967 109" Carawagon 200TDi
1972 109" SW Carawagon 2.5NA
1958 109" Carawagon 2.25P (project)
1972 109" Carawagon 200 or 300TDi (project)
1974 Dormobile 2.25D (project)

Hi all

With a little bit of work that will be a great truck. Dormatic seats transform any 109" SW, just needs a rear and side awning. Oh! and a roof rack.

2000 Quid already with 6 days to go - too many eager bidders - looks like this will fetch a lot of money even without an MOT. The 1966 2A Marshall Ambulance/Camper I once owned just went for £1101- a bargain.

This started off life as a Carawagon 'Continental' I seem to recall, and was owned by Roger (the chap who ran/runs the CASPA forum). It lost its Carawagon fittings a long time ago, and a folding roof was found for sale and fitted in the last few years. Being a Continental, it never had the characteristic folding roof from new. It is a rather early 6 pot indeed, but now sports a mis-match of camper bits from various sources.

Random pop-quiz fact: If I remember correctly, it was once owned by the chap who played cello on many Beatles records, Eleanor Rigby included!

It is far far from being an early or prototype Carawagon. Russell Searle patented the folding roof design in 1961/2 if my memory serves correctly and RJ Searle were an approved LR converter by the time the 1968 price lists were issued (the 1963 price lists only list Martin Walter as approved camper converters). There are a few 'early' Carawagons I have seen, but most seem to be SIIIs. I know of at least two on C plates, both converted from new.

You're right Calum, have you ever thought about becoming a Private Investigator  It features in the first photo on P5 of the Galleries on the C.A.S.P.A. site - and the Reg No TPC...is in the same sequence as J C's LWB Carawagon - I think perhaps we should both get out more...
