hot starting problem

Hi all, happy new year to everyone

Hoping for some help from you technical lot!
Carol the welshcarawagon is playing up

She’s a series3 fitted with a discovery 200tdi
She starts from cold with no problems but ad she warms up she gets a bit more reluctant until after an hour or so when she’s really warm she refuses point blank to start and I mean when u hit starter button absolutely nothing! No clicks etc
Leave her for a couple of hours and she’s back to starting!
List of what’s been done
New optima battery
New starter( she’s on 2nd new one just in case)
New alternator
Earths checked with an extra new one to starter
She has key ignition with a separate starter switch- which I’ve just replaced
My garage who restored her spent a day trying to find fault / checking connections etc and thought they had found earth problem hence extra earth cable but it’s still there!
Even tried bing jump leads from battery to starter still nothing
It seems to me there’s a connection or something getting warm and losing contact until it completely breaks when fully hot then once she’s cooled she’s ok
Any help would be gratefully received as I can’t go anywhere and switch off unless I’ve got 2 hours to spare!!

Hi Phil,

When you say jump leads to the starter, was that +ve and -ve, or just +ve?

If you connect directly from the battery with both jump leads, -ve to the casing and touch the +ve to the large terminal nearest the motor on the solenoid, does it spin?

If it does, if you connect the +ve to the other large terminal (where the battery lead connects), and a wire from there to the spade terminal on the solenoid, what happens?

I realise this only happens when it's hot, but you say you've got a couple of hours before it starts again, so hopefully that should be plenty of time to do those tests to prove it on to the starter or not.

Obviously, if you or your garage has already done those tests, it just has to be the starter, despite it being new :stars:

Thanks robin - I’ll try your surggestion - tried so many things ! I’ll follow your instructions and see what happens

Hi Phil,
If you do manage to fix it, please let us know how you did it.

Mine does this sometimes, but not often enough or for long enough to diagnose. Usually a few taps of the starter button gets it going again.

The starter was replaced with a brand new Bearmach one fairly recently, before that it exhibited the same symptoms as yours does now - 2 hour cool down time required after a long journey.

Now it's just a few minutes it's a not a huge problem, but more of an annoyance.

Will do Patrick- has had 3 starters in total - the last 2 were decent quality with 2 year warranties!! Will try and have a go at the weekend and let you know

Could it not be an earthing issue? I had similar issues when I transplanted a 300Tdi into Dora. One earth strap wasn't connecting properly after running the car for a while. The metal wires expand and create more resistance because of hair line cracks in the individual wires? When I connected one jump lead between the engine block and the -- of the battery, it started straight away. I too had been faffing around with changing starter motors etc. to no avail.

Just a thought...
