Starting to look at cooker but need some help please!
There seems to be pipes missing from behind the cooker knobs to underneath the burners- there’s a gap and then a pipe with sections cut out?

Sounds strange but that is how they should be.

Air is entrained by the speed of gas coming out of the little jet which mix together as they continue through the bigger pipe. What comes out at the burner is not neat gas but the already mixed gas/air ready to burn (with a nice blue flame). Also, the speed of the gas ensures there is no leakback at the gap or holes in the pipe, so it all functions safely. The metal clips can be slid partially over the opening in the pipes to adjust the amount of air to get the ideal mix.

Make sure you clean out all the rust and check carefully for blockages otherwise the burners won't work efficiently (yellow flame).

As Ian says, the gas is squirted into the pipe to mix with air, so your cooker is correct.

You might also want to check for leaks around the control spindles. There are O rings to seal the spindle, which do perish or go hard, but are easy to replace.
