Another couple of half days now sees the engine fitted, with Disco 200TDi turbo & scalloped chassis, alternator mounted using series mount with spacers, exhaust header and downpipe fabricated and rad mounted and piped up.

Just got the battery tray to fit, intercooler and air filter to mount and pipe up, accelerator cable to make up, and an ign controlled wire to the injector pump and it will be ready to fire up :nana1:

Cheers,
Robin.

I'm amazed how quick you are putting this together :o Does the disco engine use the original engine mounts ?? I've got a 300 tdi defender unit lined up for my conversion but I'm a bit nervous of starting :stars: I thought I'd remove existing mounts and then fit defender items as per the original chassis to overcome the oil filter problem that occurs with this engine.
Can you post some pics when you fit the radiator / intercooler ?? as I'm curious what space is available. I'm hoping to fit the air con unit into mine but I think it's going to be a tight fit.

Maybe if you do get over to oz this year I should try and persuade you to visit our neck of the woods, maybe play engine conversions  Here's a pic of my 300 tdi unit

whats the scalloping all about?

Pics please?

does it make a disco fit a 4 pot 109?

Hi Alex,

Yes, the Disco 200TDi turbo fits the 4 pot LWB chassis with a 'small' (see below!) scallop out just below the turbo:

I went a bit overboard and cut more than I needed to, but I didn't want to get it all together and find it was still too close.

I also added a couple of washers to the mount on that side, to lift it a little more.

I'd bought a 300 turbo, but thought this was easier as the oil lines didn't need messing with and the pipework to the intercooler was straightforward.

You do have to clock the turbo, but it's easy to do - I just unbolted the wastegate bracket and tapped the inlet round with a rubber hammer. Then drilled and tapped the housing for the wastegate bracket.

Cheers,
Robin.

Thanks very much Robin

It does seem a lot less buggeration.

Yep, and Disco 200TDi turbos are ten-a-penny compared to 300 or Defender

Of course, it's only easy if you've got the gear - I seem to remember you don't do your own welding, so if you're thinking about doing the same to your new project, just let me know

Going back to doing my own welding is something I am saving for my retirement!
That and gardening (although that has started - I am rotovating tomorrow or saturday)

Hi Robin,

Probably just like Dormy.

Phil (PJKR on the series 2 forum) checked the records and told me Dormy came out of dispatch and went to 'Dormobile' in Aug.66, but wasn't registered (in Stirling) until Feb. 67. Hence the suffix "C" chassis etc. but the "E" reg.

Edit, Sorry if this comment is a bit 'out of sinc' I hadn't realised your thread was now 3 pages long !

And what progress; 5 mile drive - don't like engine - so out and replaced, just like that !!

Hi Ian,

Possibly a delay in registration, between it leaving the factory and the conversion, but I'm not that particular about the year anyway - it's not like I was born in '66 or '67 - I would have been 7 or 8 then :tiphat:

Oh, and the engine transplant stalled a little after Patrick arrived back unexpectedly from Cornwall, so his Carawagon became available for that weekend.
The engine would have been done in time - only had the battery tray, intercooler and turbo pipework to install, but probably wouldn't have had time to do anything with the inside or the roof, so could have been a grim & draughty weekend :thud:

I've taken advantage of the delay to pull the engine out again and fit the Disco mounts and bulkhead soundproofing.

It's back in again on the new mounts, and just got the turbo hoses and battery to fit now. (waiting for some silicone bends to arrive)

What I need is another deadline - I seem to be able to work miracles against a deadline, but soooo slowly when there's no hurry :neener:
