Nearly 18 months ago I bought this series 3



Since buying it I have black out the rear windows, added to the exterior a roof rack, MOD bumperetts



and one of Robins Carawagon style awnings





The current project is the bed in the rear. I have cut the rear bulkhead down to the level of the second stiffener and then placed the capping that was at the top of the bulkhead over the stiffener to hide any sharp edges but this has left it 3 inches higher than the wheel boxes meaning I've had to make a frame up for the bed base using 3"x2" & 3"x1" timber the top for the bed is made out of one 8' x 4' sheet cut into 8 pieces. The idea is in the rear I still have 2 bench seats the first is in place in this view.



Then the seat base will slide out to the centreline and the seat back will fill the gap between that and the side panel.



and then the front board folds forward giving over 6' of bed length



and as can be seen I can have it as a single or a double bed, the 2 hinged boards behind the front seats are held on with lift off butt hinges so when they are not required I can take them out of the Land Rover. To hold the driver and passenger seat up I have used a bit of angle iron running across the level where the top of the bulkhead was, this can be removed in seconds when not needed. Hopefully the boards will be getting 4" foam on top and then covering in black leather cloth to make them match the door cards and front seats.

Good piece of work so far.

Is the left side going to have another bed or will that be cupboards and cooker etc ?

another bed as need to sleep 2 of us in comfort although if I go away on my own I only need to use one bed. hopefully I'll open out the space under the beds for more storage and use the space at the rear for cupboards, the cooker will be mounted on the rear door. My main aim is to keep the series usable but also to be able to head off for a weekend or week away in the UK with it, with it having the awning on the rear it gives an extra room to store stuff in at night meaning I can carry some items in the rear then at night store them in the awning.

Had our first proper camping trip in the Land Rover stopping at http://www.swaledalecamping.co.uk/ £4 per person and camp fires allowed only facilities being a tap at the farm house.

Looks like a great place to camp Simon.

I see you're making good use of the awning frame as well

2 humans 2 Spaniels and a Yorkie. I used to put a mattress in the rear but due to having bench seats it made it rather cramped now that the seats are part of the bed we get the full width of the rear which makes it more comfortable even with the dogs wanting to lay beside us, the other good thing is now the rear bulkhead has been lowered the bed has moved forward allowing a space to sit in the rear load area to help when getting changed and putting shoes on without standing on wet grass also you can leave the camping gear in the rear space and still use the bed if you don't want awning up.

Maybe http://www.swaledalecamping.co.uk/ would make good location for a summer camp I'm sure there must be some lanes in the area.
