flat floor

Has anyone made the rear floor of a long wheel base flat across the full width and if so how did you go about it?

I have the opportunity to get another rear tub for my series 3 and thought about removing the wheel boxes each side and putting a full flat floor in with just the wheel arches protruding into it.

The Carawagon rear floor is probably about as far as you can go with 'flattening', I think.
The wheel boxes are cut away to make room for the fridge, wardrobe, cupboards etc. and in fact, drop a few inches below the floor level in front of the wheels for extra depth.

I think the Dormobile is similar, but I haven't compared them - I'm sure someone will be along to confirm

lowering the floor level now that I hadn't thought about mind I think that'll mean chassis work to lower the rear tub mounts which I'd rather keep standard

No, taking the units out of a Dormobile will reveal standard SW wheelboxes. Only alteration I am aware of is for the (rarely) fitted toilet - exactly as Mick (Jabawocky) has done on his Barney.

That's interesting - I wonder why Dormobile didn't cut the boxes away to make more storage space (always a premium in campers!).

Though as most Dormobiles were SW bodied, and so rear fuel tank, the only cutaway which could be done is behind the wheel on the left, and on the right up to the filler pipe like Mick & Alex have done for the portapotti.

Patrick's Carawagon is one of the rare SW bodied Carawagons, and his is only cut away on the rear left, as far as I recall.
Most Carawagons were 2 door so plenty of wheel box to cut away

looking on the internet for images of the rear tub with a flat floor is turning nothing up really want it flat in front of the rear wheels so I can fit a couple of forward facing seats rather than the side benches but still not sure of the idea

I fitted minibus seats, with integral seatbelts, in Rex the Rat.
They are on a frame which can be cut/welded so that one side can sit on the wheel box and the other on the floor.
You can just about see them here:


Steve (B20wnx on SeriouslySeries) bought two from me and fitted them in the back of his SWB - perhaps if he comes to the next pub meet he'll show you his.

I already have a set of double minibus seats but really want to create something like a folding bed in rear so the minibus seats are no good. I am getting another rear tub for my 109 and while it's off the vehicle I'm wanting to carry out some mods to it to make it more practical maybe I'll be best off just making more storage lockers in the rear and fitting a bulkhead removal bar

In mine I've got the cut down wheel arches but also a couple of cut outs below normal floor level. They run from where the bulkhead was to about halfway towards the (cut down) wheel arch. They look to be original.
