Power Steering Conversions..........

Post by jerryd » Sat Feb 22, 2014 2:07 pm

When I acquired my 300tdi defender motor for my eventual conversion, I got the radiator, inter cooler and the complete defender power steering set up with it. I was thinking along the lines that I could use all these items.
However, I now think that it will be impossible to use the defender power steering box and use the radiator/ inter cooler side by side as in the defender set up without loosing the series front end :stars:

So now I'm thinking P38 steering box fitted to the outside of the chassis rail will enable me to use the radiator / oil cooler side by side. Does anybody know for sure which bits I'd need to complete this conversion ?? There doesn't seem to be too much info available that gives a full list of parts required. Parts are quite scarce here too so demand a high purchase price :shakehead:

I did see a post from Robin on one site asking similar questions, have you found out anymore info Robin ??? I'm getting quite keen to start the next part of my project but get quite dizzy reading all these different opinions :tiphat:

Hi Jerry,

Not yet - my new chassis is still stood on its side in my garage!

However, I think I now have everything ready for the power steering:
P38 power steering box with bottom column section & UJs (hopefully will marry up to the Defender steering column),
Disco 300TDi donor sat on the trailer (for engine with power steering pump, pipes etc.),
Defender 300tdi/td5 Steering Column, 48 spline to take standard Series wheel,
Various Disco track rods/drag links - not sure which is suitable for length yet.

I also need to fabricate a mounting for the steering box using some 6mm or 8mm plate.

I'm hoping to make a start some time this year

Cheers,
Robin.

We went for the IH Scout steering box.
Bombproof and easy fit.
No leaks.

You can still buy them new (http://www.ebay.com/bhp/international-steering-box) or here (http://www.shopih.com/SII-PWRSTR-BOX-p-S5.html) to name a few..

Several breakers could surprise you - I bought 2 in Holland for € 100 a long time ago to have a spare.

A right hand drive one would be needed though.
Teri-Ann reckons they were LHD only.

Another bolt on was the one from the Shorland armoured land rover. Hens teeth now

Of course, there's always the Heystee power steering ram system, at around £1k :aaagh:

Details HERE

We have this conversion on a RHD (so the steeringwheel is on the RH side of the vehicle)

Image

You just mount it on the inside of the chassisrails... Used it with both a 2.25 & 2.5 diesel..

My idea of using the P38 steering box is so that it is fitted to the outside of the chassis rail, this will then enable me to use the 300tdi radiator / intercooler fitted side by side as in the defender. Hopefully I will then have enough room in front of these to complete the air con installation :stars:
