Oh dear!!

Have you had a good look at the rest of the chassis - tapping it with a hammer?

Dumbiron replacement is fairly straightforward, though I see you've also got the P38 power steering which will make it a little more involved.

Hope you don't find anything more serious.

My 88" passed an MOT and failed like that (but not quite so badly) on both dumb irons about 7 months later. If there's no evidence of external corrosion it's easily missed and my tester had even hit it with the testing mallet!

Had this on my first 109 came back from a day out to a wonky bumper, jacked it up and my dad plated it.

Anyone know a decent suppler of replacement dumb irons as my current Land Rovers could do with some, the daily needs it's previous replacement replacing as it is more rotten than the original at other side!

What would you guys recommend? Try to clean it up and weld it and plate it over or go for the replacement route. Already have a new dumbiron just in case. But replacing it would mean that I need to take the power steering box and plate off which I would like to prevent.

The only way to know is to cut back until you find good thick steel to weld to.

It's no good plating if the rest of the dumbiron is rotten!

AAAAGGGGGHHHHHHH :thud:

It's a wonder it's lasted as long as it has - presumably it was a 'quick fix' and slap underseal on just so the previous owner could sell it

I hope you don't find any more filler on the chassis!

Are you old enough to remember the magnet trick? Prior to manufacturers dipping bodies it was common to find wings, arches & sills patched with filler on cars over 3-4 years old, so it was always worth running a magnet over those areas when looking to buy a car.
