2x Carawagon roof rebuids
2x Carawagon roof rebuids
Giday all.
I have just bought a 1969 Carawagon and a friend of mine also has a 1967 Carawagon.
These are pretty rare in Australia and we are keen to get these up and running and start doing some trips in the Victorian High Country as well as a few outback trips.
While I'm waiting for mine to get transported down from Qld I have started on the refurb of my mates roof - and I'm sure I'm going to have a few questions to ask along the way
Here are a few picks of the '67 roof And stripped down

Now for my first question:
When restoring these do you normally take off the aluminium angle that goes around the perimeter of the room opening to re-seal it?

I haven't found I've needed to on any of the ones I've done.JohnnoP wrote:Now for my first question:

I think whatever sealant Searle used seems to have stood the test of time.
Hope that helps,
Robin.

Fantastic - that saves me a heap of time!RMS wrote: I haven't found I've needed to on any of the ones I've done.

I've notice the bottom edge of the ply sides have a bevel along its edge.
Did the top edge have the same bevel? Its hard to tell as the top edge has deteriorated so much. It almost seems that it might have had a rounded edge to the top of the ply.

Yes, original sides (I assume some of the ones I've done had been original) had a bevel on the top edge, I assume it's so the seal isn't bent out at a right angle when the roof is up.
Cheers,
Robin.

Yes I imagine that would be the reason and also to allow water to drain away from the hinge.

Re: 2x Carawagon roof rebuids
Any more progress on these roof rebuilds?
Re: 2x Carawagon roof rebuids
Unfortunately not much progress on the roofs.
My mates one had a few cracks in the aluminium which have been welded up and now needs to paint the roof which wasn’t part of the plan.
We have the marine ply, stainless steel hinges and screws but still need to get the rubber seals.
In the mean time I’ve been stripping mine down to do the rust repairs on the bulkhead.
