Been looking at a couple of the Dorma roofs, and wondering how they're fastened down for travelling. As mine is a 3 door Carawagon I've got glass down the length of the back, and it's too high to fit any clips above it.

Dormis have four hold downs. 2 external clip (wouldn't matter if you moved them) and two internal straps. Why don't you either move the clips of fit clips internally front and back as the original straps. My clips popped open the other day and the straps kept the roof firmly in position.

Fantastic - so how near is it to actually using it as a camper ?

Not very, most of the interior is missing, but I do have the original front seats. Also need the roof repairing as there's a kink in the Dorma frame & the fibre glass needs some TLC. It's taken over 3 years (and 6 months in garage - mostly waiting) to get this far. Maybe by the time I retire.....

But on the plus side I can get the rest of the metal lining out (most is buckled) and sort the side windows. Can also drive it to see what else needs doing mechanically. Will be up sometime to see if your project layout makes sense when I take the passenger seat out.

Not done much in the last 18months, but......

Metal insulation now all out.
New passenger seat in (just need to figure out do to fix it upright as the new Brit Part ones don't thread all three holes) before doing the driver's.
Sliding windows removed & refitted (screwed into a tanalised timber frame so I can fit some fly screens later). Blinds can screw to the same timber from the inside.
Main beam warning & alternator fixed (but that seems to have stopped main beam from working; on the plus side the MOT was done before they connected the alternator) and dip works OK.

Runs OK, but a bit difficult to keep going when cold. But should be getting a 2.5N/A or TDi fitted along with new loom, overdrive & some painting. Garage are also threatening to start fixing the roof!

Robin - could you take some pics and add rough dimensions to the units in your Carawagon project? Want to talk to a cabinet maker about some copies. Being cheeky, could I possibly borrow the units at some point to make that easier?

Anyone got any info on these to insulate the back? I'm keeping the metal cladding but not refitting it.

I'm sure it can be bought somewhere else - so contacts useful.

Given the 88" chassis has now failed time to spend the time & money on the Carawagon! And then save for chassis & bulkhead for the 88"......

Hi Rob,

My project Carawagon with the same layout as yours is currently crammed full of stuff, so getting to the cupboards etc. will require clearing it out first!

It should be easier once I can get it to the new barn, but don't know when that will be yet as we're still trying to clear the house for rewiring.

Personally I would avoid the shiny bubble insulation - it might look ok on a modern camper but looks a little out of place on a 1960s camper, in my opinion

The carpet should do the job, though polypropylene carpet like that is available, much more cheaply I would think, from ordinary carpet shops.
we did my workshop floor at the old house in something very similar.

Cheers,
Robin.

Was looking at lining the back with the carpet too - gives some insulation & hides the window frames. The metal plates are very distorted & won't easily go back (particularly with the window fix I've added). May not look original but much warmer!

No worries re units. Can always leave those for now & get the mechanicals & bed sorted.

Having nearly lost a door top she's booked in for new doors, an engine & power steering fettle plus electrics. This includes getting a proper list of what is fitted for my reference when doing work in the future - ie what 2.5 petrol & power steering it is!

Roof moving towards getting done along with the interior. All being well, I think Overlander in September is marginal & Newark probable.

Well, she's finally in for the roof repairs & interior plus overdrive etc. Main Dorma roof section is now the right shape and the pop-up off for cleaning up & re-gelling. The canvas looked OK until the top was in bits, but on examination is knackered: if it's still there does anyone want it for a template? The tartan bunk is actually still fairly good, as long as no one sleeps in it, so that'll be used for storage for now.

Power steering is coming out as the PO had cut the cross member through, it was (probably) safe, but I didn't want to have that discussion in the event of a mishap. Rebuilt steering box courtesy of Jonny.

There are some pics on https://www.facebook.com/LandRoverRelics/ and hopefully she'll be ready for about February (although Karen may not be as it won't be warm enough, even with the heater & insulation). I'll then build up a list of stuff over the summer for next winter's work (awning etc).

Found some period lamps here https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0140WFL6G/ which solves light and will be safer than paraffin.
