Something I found in a hedge.

Post by Jabbawocky » Mon Feb 20, 2012 10:27 pm

Hi all

Here is our little darling.

Image

She is a 1971 2a 6 cylinder export model Dormobile, now fitted with a 300tdi disco engine. Rebuilt 2007-2010 and has been to the French/Swiss Alps, Dormobile gathering in Normandy and overland to Morocco in May 2011.

Looking forward to trips this summer.

Hi Mick,

Nice to see the old bus again - are you ready for this year's round of shows?

Cheers,
Robin.

Hi Robin

Hoping to sell at Skipton, so unfortunately won't be able to camp, but planning to be at Driffield. Lots to do to Barney before the show season. Gearbox needs new bearings and still not sorted the springs, but we will be there, so save me a place.

Cheers Mick

oh! why did I mention the bearings in the gearbox!! Going to meet our lass for lunch today and running a little late. Put my foot down coming off the Silsden roundabout and I now have a gearbox with 4th high and low only.

On the brightside, at least it will be done for summer.

Hi Mick,

How did you know it was the bearings going, before they failed? What's the sign?

Probably noise! :stars:

We damaged the front mainshaft bearing in Morocco as we didn't realise the gearbox was steadily pumping its oil into the transfer box until it was too late.
As that bearing is the highest in the box, it was starved, and became very noisy in all but 4th gear.
We were lucky and managed to get home; around 2500miles, and it survived until we pulled the box out.

Cheers,
Robin.

HI Jeremy

It rumbled going down steep hills. It turned out to be two teeth off the third gear cog on the mainshaft. Could have been off for a few weeks/months, but on Tuesday, one of the bits got into the rear bearing on the layshaft and BANG!!! The layshaft snapped clean. All the nuts were still very tight and there was no sign of heat/stress?

So, did the teeth come of because of the power of the TDi or because they are 40 years old?

The more worrying thing is the clutch is down to the rivets after only 10,000 miles.

That's odd Mick - we replaced the clutch in Patrick's Carawagon as it was slipping (turned out to be either lack of free play in the master cylinder or the flexi breaking down :thud: ) and there's virtually no wear compared to the new one after 6000 miles!

HI Phil

That's a great photo and I will always be grateful to you and Chris for going and getting her.

Who would of thought then that young chap in the photo would now be a responsible dad. Workshop meet at his house next Saturday, after he has taken junior swimming.
