Chantelle

Post by gossamer » Thu Oct 20, 2016 10:01 pm

Hi chaps.

I collected Chantelle on the big white taxi today and moved her to a new place for fettling.

The long term plan is to turn her into a camper (preferably Carawagon style) for Sproggle.

As she went up the ramp onto the truck 8 years worth of green water ran out of the chassis and through the rear cross member.

The engine ran, though and though the brakes are kn@ckered she drove around a bit until she got bogged in the soft ground of the paddock she's parked in.

I found the front propshaft is missing so 4WD was not an option.

Front axle breather is missing too, I suspect the front axle is full of green water too.

This could prove to be quite a project.

That's the one, Brad.

I hadn't planned to purchase another land rover but I couldn't miss this opportunity.

The vehicle came with lots of spares that I may need to sell to fund the project.

I'm thinking it may be best to start with a galve chassis.

All being well, Sproggle and I will visit Chantelle tomorrow to remove some of the gear from the rear and bring it back here for sorting, mending, chucking away as appropriate.

Sproggle is quite excited.

G'day Matt, i remember many years ago with snow and ice on the ground assembling a series one front axle with tractor joint's so i could A frame it a good 20 miles back home past Lincolnshire main police station with my youngest son who is now in his forties.

He thought it was great helping me dig out the parts and fitting everything back together so i gave him the job of watching the A frame didn't rip the front dumb iron's off especially when i reversed them both in my back yard that was a tight fit in those day's with a yard and garden full of trucks  .

It was great when i was tinkering with a bit of light off roading in a quarry to loosen up the springs and create a lot of dust to soak up the oil i had just drained from the truck and sprayed underneath till one day when he was sat on the roof rack i forgot and left him hanging in a tree :aaagh: .

He thought it was so funny and laughed so much he forgot to hold on and promptly fell from the tree branch he was hanging on to  , he still laughs about it 20 odd years later while telling others that have not heard the story which in tern helps me remember the good times of having little ones not that they are small now.

The best time of there lives they say and it was also mine by just being a dad :gold: .

Catch you later. R-Rose :tiphat: .

We visited Chantelle at the weekend and enjoyed clearing stuff out of the back as well as trying to work out exactly what the old girl has been in her life so far.

She appears to have 1 ton bits at the back and military style dumb irons at the front with a civvi rear x member.

Suffix B, Diesel, probably started life as a truck cab. Seems to have been marine blue, though some bits are bronze green.

Wipers are off, though I found one unit in a box in the back.

Only the driver's seat is present.

Bulkhead is a bit careworn. The Salisbury axle is one I fitted for the PO about nine years ago, the original rover one had expired.

I would like to re fit a rover one in time, when I have a chance to rebuild one.

The engine runs quite nicely.

The hard top is solid and appears to be watertight, though the household gloss is doing the usual thing of falling off inside.

Sproggle enjoyed revving the engine.

Thanks to my chums who are helping to make this adventure possible.
