Very rare Carawagon - anyone ever seen one?

Post by RMS » Thu May 03, 2018 6:53 pm

I recently had to upload and re-post a lot of the Carawagon brochure scans to the forum, and noticed this one, which I hadn't really noticed before.

At first glance it looks like a lot of other LWB Carawagons, but there are subtle differences.

A translucent fibreglass roof panel and a sunroof over the cab would have made it very light and airy, even with the roof down, I would think.

The bed arrangement is the same as one of my projects (1972) and one just being restored by RobW on here, with a single down each side, though mine will also make a full width double.

I suppose it's one of those we'll never see in the flesh - a real shame we don't have any factory records to show how many might have been made, compared to the 'standard' alloy roof version.

Cheers,
Robin.

Think the table is different to mine as there are hole for 3 legs on the bulkhead. But it is what's going back in!

Yes Rob, yours is the same as my '72 project, as far as I can tell.

It was the bed arrangement I though might be the same/similar as ours.

It will be good to compare ours when I get mine on the road. Sadly my Dormobile project has taken priority this year as it requires less work to get it on the road.
My '72 Carawagon came without an engine (got a 300TDi & LT77 in the pipeline as it was a 6 pot) and the roof woodwork and seals replacing so it's likeley to be the next project after the Dormobile.

The table set-up on this Series80 looks similar, perhaps, to a more modern caravan folding type, with legs that fold out  It does say it's freestanding.

Cheers,
Robin.

Just scanning through and came across this post. Samuel and I went to Bicester this year and there was a fibre glass roof Carawagon there. Got talking to the guy and he came from Hungerford, just a few miles down the road from me. It had been in his family all its life.

We swapped details and he said he would call but never did. Unfortunately, I have lost his number. The first chance I get I will go to Hungerford in my Carawagon and maybe put a notice in the local newsagent and ask around to see if anyone knows him

It would be great if you could - a very rare Carawagon indeed, I think.

It would be interesting to see how the roof has stood the test of time!
